Is rennet halal?

Rennet · Animal rennet · Microbial rennet

The short answer
Depends on the type, use or market

It depends on the rennet and your mazhab. Microbial rennet raises no question. Animal rennet is accepted in the Hanafi school and needs halal slaughter in the Shafi'i and Maliki schools.

From HalalSnap's ruling table v1.4, rule R-GEL-07. Rules and sources current to 22 Aug 2026; page updated 11 Oct 2026.

Why it depends

Microbial or vegetable rennet, used in most modern cheese, raises no animal question at all. Animal rennet is a genuine difference between the schools: the Hanafi school, and one well-known Hanbali report, accept it even from animals not slaughtered Islamically, while the Shafi'i and Maliki schools require halal slaughter. A scan applies your own school.

How to check the pack

  • "Microbial rennet", "vegetarian rennet", "suitable for vegetarians" or a halal mark settles it.
  • Look for a recognised halal mark (JAKIM, MUI/BPJPH, MUIS or another reputable certifier) on the pack in your hand. A mark you can see settles it for the whole product.R-CERT-01
  • Still unsure? Ask the maker which source they use, or choose a certified alternative.
